Andrea Trew Newsletter Graphic

During my Vice Presidency at AIGA UT Dallas Student Group for Design, I had the honor of inviting and hosting Andrea Trew from Trew Creative to be a keynote speaker for an online event to help inspire my colleagues and give them a glimpse of what it is like to enter the field of graphic design.

To promote the event, I designed a newsletter graphic to invite people to check out the event and help them feel less intimidated. Much feedback from previous attendees noted that they feel intimidated to attend some of our events because they lack experience or the confidence to engage with our speakers. Since the event was in October, I themed the post after Halloween in hopes that it would lessen the fear of attending a speaker event.

Earlier Iterations

To emphasize the welcoming aspect of the graphic, I chose to use rounded edges to not intimidate the viewer into thinking it is an exclusive type of event. Playing off of the Halloween theme, I added some ghosts, but then realized that the style of the ghosts at the bottom did not quite match the ones at the top, not did they look as finalized as I would have preferred.

Final Design

After receiving feedback from the officer board, I lowered the opacity of some of the ghosts to give it a more haunting effect while also cleaning up a bit of the line art. I also made sure to differentiate the text by making Andrea Trew’s name a contrasting value of orange to emphasize who the speaker was. Since the graphic was to be featured in an email, I omitted some details to later include in the text body of the email itself.

Final Remarks

The resulting email newsletter received an increase in engagement with our email newsletter subscribers, which was the highest it ever was in the year 2021.
